Biography

Jason has lived in the La Trobe area for more than 40 years and shares a strong affinity with the local residents. He is passionate about community safety and is focussed on ensuring La Trobe has first class health facilities, schools and sporting hubs, and upgrading roads so that residents can spend less time driving and more time at home with their families.

Prior to entering politics, Jason graduated from the Victorian Police Academy and progressed to become a Detective Senior Constable at the Organised Crime Squad. He completed a Masters in Innovation Service Management and a thesis on Counter Terrorism, and was promoted to Senior Sergeant at the Counter Terrorism Unit.

From 2004 – 2010 Jason served as the Federal Member for La Trobe, where he actively used his knowledge of counter terrorism to contribute to national debate, which assisted the Howard Government in implementing tougher terrorism laws. In 2008, Jason was appointed as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Justice and Public Security.

In 2013 Jason was re-elected to Federal Parliament and was subsequently appointed the Chair of the Joint Standing Committee on Migration. In this role he has tackled the difficult issue of visa cancellations for violent criminals, as well as fighting for intervention orders on extremists and promoting greater recognition of the very real African gang threat.

A few of Jason’s other achievements include the delivery of Bryn Mawr Bridge in Berwick, Bunjil Place in Narre Warren and major upgrades to the Monash Freeway together with the Beaconsfield Interchange.Announcements for the future include $40 million for upgrades at the Berwick campus of Federation University, as well as Minta City, a Berwick based development that will deliver 10,000 jobs in advanced manufacturing.

With the redistribution of the Federal electorate boundaries in July 2018, Jason looks forward to representing the very diverse area of Pakenham and its surrounds. He is currently working with the various sporting clubs in the Pakenham area to try and secure urgent upgrades that will support more junior and female participation.

Jason lives locally with his wife Judy and their daughter Jasmine.
