  • Coalition commits to 2012 as the Year of Meals on Wheels

    30/07/10

The Coalition will declare 2012 the ‘Year of Meals on Wheels’ and provide $2 million to the Australian Meals on Wheels Association to support this important initiative.

Making the announcement in Adelaide today, Senator Fierravanti-Wells, Shadow Minister for Ageing said “Meals on Wheels is an iconic and very well respected community service that deserves more recognition.”

Meals on Wheels are at the heart of many communities with 740 services across Australia and some 13 million meals delivered by 80,000 dedicated volunteers annually. Up to 50,000 meals are delivered daily.

“This is not just about the meal. It is about companionship and social interaction. For many clients, the daily visit of a Meals on Wheels volunteer is warmly welcomed and helps the frail and aged, the disabled, carers and others to maintain their independence.”

“It also helps build social capital which is so vital in our communities,” said Senator Fierravanti-Wells.

“The Year of Meals on Wheels and the funding will enable Australian Meals on Wheels to assist with promotion in 2012 and increase diversity and choice in its services. It will also afford the opportunity to recognise the marvellous work of its volunteers and assist in attracting more volunteers,” said Senator Fierravanti-Wells.
