About Andrew

Andrew Hastie is the Federal Member for Canning and is the Shadow Minister for Defence.

Prior to entering Parliament in 2015, Andrew served as an officer in the Australian Defence Force, leading Aussie diggers from the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Darwin and the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) in Perth.

Andrew joined the Australian Defence Force in 2003, attending the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) and Royal Military College Duntroon. Andrew served as an officer in the 2nd Cavalry Regiment in Darwin, and the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) in Perth, being deployed to Afghanistan, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific.

Since entering parliament Andrew has fought to deliver better services and job opportunities for the people of Canning. This has included a particular focus on tackling the devastating impact of drug abuse in the local community, and lobbying Canberra for greater infrastructure investment in the Peel region.

Between 2017 and 2020, Andrew was the Chair of the Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, and from 2020 to 2022 he was the Assistant Minister for Defence.

Andrew Hastie lives in Mandurah, Western Australia, with his wife Ruth and their three young children, Jonathan, Beatrice and Jemimah.
