Protect our War Memorials
Vandals are smashing, defacing, and desecrating the memorials that honour Australians who served our country, and there are no real consequences.
Across Australia, memorials honouring our history are being attacked:
- Plaques honouring local veterans stolen and destroyed
- Century-old memorials defaced with anti-Australian slogans
- Historic monuments smashed and vandalised
- Those responsible facing inadequate consequences
In the small Victorian community of Dobie, vandals badly damaged the local war memorial, stole a plaque honouring local veterans, and destroyed surrounding trees and plants.
Barely a month earlier, the nearby 100-year-old Beaufort War Memorial was spray-painted with the words “death to Australia” and “death to the ADF”.
Earlier this year, Melbourne’s 155-year-old Pioneer Monument in Flagstaff Gardens was destroyed and defaced with anti-Australian graffiti.
These are not ordinary pieces of stone or metal.
They carry the names and stories of Australians who served our country. Many left their homes and families and never returned.
Enough is enough.
Australians should expect serious consequences for anyone who deliberately destroys, damages or desecrates memorials commemorating our service, sacrifice and national history.
