A Dutton Coalition Government will invest $50 million in establishing lithium battery recycling collection points, building on our strong recycling credentials and delivering a vital boost to local community safety and environmental protection.
This investment will establish over 145 battery collection points nationwide for safe battery disposal, as well as fund a national awareness and education campaign to help Australians properly manage lithium-ion waste.
Shadow Environment Minister Jonno Duniam says the fund responds to a rapidly growing safety and environmental concern.
“It is estimated that there are now more than 10,000 battery fires each year in waste facilities, with the number of instances rising as more and more lithium-ion batteries are wrongly thrown in general waste,” Senator Duniam said.
“Battery fires are just one of many recycling, waste and environment issues that have not been satisfactorily addressed by the Albanese Labor Government for this whole parliamentary term.
“The Coalition has already announced many investments in local initiatives to protect and nurture native animals, create more green spaces, and upgrade environmental values and recreational facilities. The Lithium Battery Fund builds on these initiatives as a further commitment to projects with meaningful local outcomes.”
“Bridget Archer has been a passionate advocate for the environment, safety and her local community.”
Bridget Archer, Liberal member for Bass, said the battery plan is important for Tasmania, where communities are already experiencing the impact of inadequate e-waste facilities and education.
“The Tasmania Fire Service has issued warnings about proper handling of lithium-ion batteries, and we’ve seen numerous battery fires both in homes and at waste facilities across our state,” Ms Archer said.
“As the use of e-bikes, power tools, vapes and mobile phones continues to rise, so too does the need for a proper national strategy to deal with battery waste.
“This policy ensures Tasmanians have access to safe, local disposal facilities — protecting both people and our natural environment. I will always fight for safety and sustainability in Bass.”
Today’s commitment builds on the more than $500 million in waste initiatives that the Coalition devised and delivered in government, including the Recycling Modernisation Fund.
The Coalition is committed to providing practical solutions to address environmental challenges and has a strong plan to get Australia back on track.
