Rhiannon must explain K.G.B. contact
28/01/12
“Today’s disclosure (1) that, as an 18 year old embarking on a voyage to the UK on the Shota Rustaveli, (2)(3) Lee Rhiannon was to rendezvous on board with a Russian identified as a senior KGB agent, demands a full explanation from the Greens Senator,” Senator Eric Abetz said today.
ASIO intelligence reports reveal that, when arranging this rendezvous Vladimir Alekseev from the Soviet Embassy said that he was calling on behalf of another Soviet diplomat, Ivan Stenin.
ASIO concluded that Alekseev and Stenin were both senior Soviet intelligence officers - many ASIO officers believing that Alekseev was the KGB station chief, or rezident, at the Soviet Embassy in Canberra.
“Senator Rhiannon must give a full and frank account of her involvement with Stenin and Alekseev, why she was meeting Alekseev and what happened at any meeting,” Senator Abetz said.
“Greens Leader, Senator Bob Brown, must ensure that Senator Rhiannon made such an explanation.”
“It is important to remember that this incident occurred during the Cold War when the communist Soviet Union was bent on the subversion and revolutionary overthrow of Western democracies including Australia,” Senator Abetz said.
“Senator Rhiannon should also say whether she visited any Eastern bloc countries while overseas in 1970-71 and, if so, which ones and why.”
“Senator Rhiannon needs to provide a full explanation to the Parliament as soon as the Senate resumes,” Senator Abetz concluded.
