$21 million for flood mitigation work in Townsville
02/08/10
A Coalition government will take real action and provide $21 million for critical flood mitigation works at Blakey’s Crossing in Northern Townsville.
The funding will deliver the reconstruction of the existing road with the capacity to provide pathways for two lanes. In addition, pedestrian pavement works and channelling works will also be undertaken to prevent the road from flooding.
Residents of Northern Townsville are vulnerable to flooding each wet season along the critical route on Ingham Road leading into the CBD.
With thousands of vehicles using this route daily and numbers expected to continue increasing, it is vital that Townsville remains accessible throughout the year.
This principal route is also the main access to Townville’s major industrial area. It is critical that access to this important part of Townsville’s economic activity is maintained at all times.
The Coalition’s commitment of $21 million towards this critical local road project will ensure that the growing Northern Beaches community and Townsville’s major industrial area are not faced with disruptions to their economic productivity and daily lives during the wet season.
The completion of this road project will ensure that the flow of commercial vehicles is not disrupted by the wet season.
Townsville must be a city that is open and accessible year round. This commitment will ensure that Townsville’s major industrial area is also accessible year round.
Construction will commence after the wet season with completion expected within 12 months.
