The Liberal and Nationals Government will continue to provide record funding for education with a focus on student results and outcomes.

We will deliver record funding for child care, for kindergarten, for schools, and for higher education.

We will ensure that every Australian, no matter where they live, has access to a world-class education.

We are providing a record $21.4 billion for state schools, Catholic schools and Independent schools which is a 66 per cent increase since we came to government. We are investing a record $8.6 billion in child care, more than $3 billion in vocational education and $17.7 billion in the university sector, an increase of 19 per cent since we were elected.

Minister for Education Dan Tehan said our record investment in education was matched with a plan to ensure that money was spent delivering a better education for our children.

“We understand that strong reading and writing skills are the foundation of a successful education,” Mr Tehan said.

“That is why we will invest $10.8 million to provide a voluntary phonics health check for every Year 1 student so parents and teachers can be confident their children are not falling behind. We will also ensure that trainee teachers learn how to teach phonics as part of their university degree to ensure they can teach phonics in the classroom.

“We will work with states and territory governments on best practice policies on mobile phone use in the classrooms.

“We will also back our teachers so they can focus on teaching by developing a strategy to tackle the abuse of teachers in the classroom and conducting a review to cut red tape. We will also invest an additional $15 million for Teach for Australia to train high achieving teachers who will become high quality school leaders in rural, remote or disadvantaged schools.

“The Liberals and Nationals will continue to focus on ensuring the opportunities and benefits of higher education are available to every Australian, no matter where they live. We will provide $15 million to create another five Regional Study Hubs to support young people to study while they live in their homes and their communities.

“We will also provide $2 million for the Country Education Partnership to expand its successful Rural Inspire program to support more regional and rural Australians to pursue further education through mentoring and other opportunities.

“Our Government has a plan to deliver record funding for education without increasing taxes, unlike Labor who will threaten our economic prosperity through billions of dollars in new taxes.”
