  • Labor's Malaysian deal on borrowed time as another boat arrives

    18/05/11

Labor's stop gap, yet to be completed deal with Malaysia is on borrowed time, with the arrival of another illegal boat, Shadow Minister for Productivity and Population & Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison and Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection, Michael Keenan said today.

“This is the third boat to arrive in just four days, following the announcement of Labor's yet to be finalised five for one people swap deal with Malaysia,” Mr Morrison said.

“Labor is quickly using up their 800 quota before pen has even been put to paper in Malaysia, let alone having signed the deal off,” he said.

“More than 100 people have now arrived in the past few days, and there is no option to extend the Government’s credit limit on transfers. As the Malaysian Government has clearly said, this is a one off deal.

“Labor's decision to desperately rush out a headline, rather than wait for details of their proposed Malaysian agreement to be finalised, has clearly sparked a surge in illegal boat arrivals.

“This is further proof that Labor constantly fail to think their policies through on border protection. They are making it up on the run.

“Labor are clearly more interested in stopping the headlines than they are in stopping the boats and the chaos that now exists right across our detention network,” Mr Morrison said.

Mr Keenan said: “Labor's Malaysian announcement has unleashed a new wave of boats as the people smugglers respond to Julia Gillard’s latest misguided efforts.

“The Government continues to display their reverse midas touch where everything they turn their attention to becomes worse.

“Julia Gillard used to attack the Pacific Solution for not being a long term fix to the problem of illegal arrivals.

“Labor’s border protection disaster shows no sign of easing and the Governments clumsiness only makes matters worse,” he said.
