  • Strikes a result of Labor's dropped ball

    02/05/11

Waterfront strikes this weekend that will grind Australian ports to a halt affecting 15 ships and stopping 17,797 containers from being unloaded is another sign of productivity being thrown out the window by Labor.

The strike is in support of a $46,000 wage increase to workers already earning over $100,000 for 185 days work per year, has been given the green light by Labors Fair Work laws.

"Nobody but Labor and the Unions would say that asking for a $46,000 pay rise without considering any productivity offsets at all would not constitute 'Good Faith Bargining', but Labor's Fair Work laws allow it," Senator Abetz said today.

"Labor's system encourages strike action and discourages discussion about workplace productivity which shows that common sense has been abandoned under the Fair Work laws.

The Unions are fighting for excessive wages increases following wins of pay rises of up to $50,000 per year for offshore workers and on the Wonthaggi Desalination Plant in Victoria.

"If Labor don't get their act together, we will see wages breakouts occurring, productivity declining even further and more strikes."

"The former Coalition Government presided over a long period of improved productivity and industrial stability on the waterfront but now, on Julia Gillard's watch, this has totally broken down," Senator Abetz concluded.
