I’m very pleased to be here at Wilson’s request, because even though the mining tax has been taken off commodities except for iron ore and coal, the fact is that everyone in the mining industry here in Western Australia is very anxious about the tax.

Everyone here in Western Australia is very concerned that if the Government gets re-elected it won’t be Labor’s mining tax that gets through, it’ll be the Greens mining tax, because the Greens will hold the balance of power in the Senate, thanks to Labor’s secret preference deal and as we know, the Greens want a bigger, higher mining tax.

The way these things operate, once the legislation is through the Parliament it’s probably only going to be a stroke of the pen that will enable more minerals to be brought in, the rate of the tax to be changed, and once a government gets addicted to a tax, their temptation is always to increase the rate of tax. So I think this tax is a real problem for the mining sector generally, and of course, if it’s a problem for the mining sector, it’s a problem for every place in Australia which services the mining sector and just because there’s not as many mines in most places as there are here in Kalgoorlie, doesn’t mean that there’s not a mining industry right around Australia.

So look, it’s great to be here. Wilson, thank you for the work you’ve done to alert our country to the dangers posed by the mining tax and I just want to say to Bart, to Gavin, to everyone else who’s made our welcome here, thank you very much and as far as I’m concerned, the Coalition won’t let you down. We’re here to make sure that the mining industry in the future has an even bigger and more prosperous place in Australia’s economy than it’s had in the past. We are dependent on those oil carriers heading north in the same way that we once rode on the sheep’s back. It’s too important to trifle with and we’ll never trifle with it as far as the Coalition’s concerned. So Bart, thank you so much and thanks everyone else for making us so welcome. It’s great to be here and I look forward to coming back, hopefully as Prime Minister.
