The Coalition

Today, the Liberal and National parties have reformed the Coalition, acting in the national interest to hold an Albanese Government that is failing Australians to account.

The Coalition is the most enduring and successful partnership in Australian political history, where for generations we have delivered strong and stable government.

We acknowledge this has been a difficult period for millions of Coalition supporters, and many other Australians, who rely on our parties to scrutinise the government and provide national leadership.

The Coalition is back together and looking to the future, not the past. We are squarely focused on representing the Australian people and fighting for their needs, their hopes and their aspirations. They deserve no less, expect no less and will receive no less.

We recognise and thank our colleagues, party officials and grassroots members who have worked with us to restore these Coalition arrangements. The reformation occurs today on the following basis:

  • For a cumulative six-week period, all Nationals’ parliamentarians (including Senators) will have served outside shadow ministerial portfolios.
  • Each shadow minister will return to their previously-held roles on 1 March 2026, at which point existing acting shadow ministerial portfolio arrangements announced on 30 January 2026 end.
  • To ensure joint representation and accountability in decision-making during this interim period, the Leader and Deputy Leader of the Nationals will attend meetings of the Leadership Group, Shadow Cabinet and Shadow Economic Review Committee.
  • Coalition internal processes will be strengthened, including all Shadow Ministers signing agreement to Shadow Cabinet solidarity, the introduction of a Shadow Cabinet ‘decisions register’, codification that neither individual party is able to overturn decisions of the Shadow Cabinet and enshrining the primacy of the Joint Party Room.

Our first Joint Party Room Meeting will take place on Tuesday 10 February 2026.
