An elected Dutton Coalition Government will commit $113.6 million for the Moss Vale Northern Bypass to ease traffic congestion across the Southern Highlands.
Modelling shows the Moss Vale Northern Bypass could reduce peak traffic on Argyle Street in Moss Vale by 25-30 per cent. It will take pressure off connecting roads, while improving safety for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
The project has been strongly supported by the Wingecarribee Shire Council and would be delivered in partnership with the New South Wales Government, with a new 3.4 kilometre single-lane road along Moss Vale’s northern boundary, linking Argyle Street north to Berrima Road.
The Coalition’s commitment of $113.6 million represents an 80 per cent investment in delivering this project.
Heavy vehicles travelling to or from the Illawarra will be able to cross Argyle Street to access the bypass via Suttor Road without entering Moss Vale’s main street. A new 90-metre bridge over the Main Southern Railway will ensure a second, unrestricted crossing point for vehicles.
Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Peter Dutton MP, said the Coalition will invest in the critical infrastructure that will support the growth of the Southern Highlands.
“For too long, this region has been taken for granted by Labor. The local community has been crying out for the Moss Vale Northern Bypass and unlike the Albanese Labor Government, the Coalition has listened.
“Over the last three years, Labor has shown it doesn’t care about vital infrastructure projects like this. Instead, Labor has cancelled, cut and delayed more than $30 billion in infrastructure projects.
Liberal candidate for Whitlam, Mr Nathaniel Smith, said the bypass would transform the Southern Highlands into a more enjoyable place to live, work and visit.
“This bypass will give trucks and heavy vehicles an alternative route – meaning less traffic congestion in our town centre.
“Reducing traffic along Argyle Street has been a long-standing concern for our community, particularly with the recent surge in residential development. The Southern Highlands deserves the infrastructure to match its growing needs, while preserving the beautiful Moss Vale township we all love.
“It’s not just about improving productivity – it’s about safety. Diverting heavy traffic out of the main street of Moss Vale will make a huge difference. I’m proud to say that a Dutton Liberal Government will deliver this vital investment in the future of the Southern Highlands as a region.”
