Remarks at bilateral with His Excellency Mr Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Prime Minister of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Vientiane, Laos

PRIME MINISTER OF THE SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM – TRANSLATION:

On behalf of my Government I want to extend to you congratulations on your re-election. I have to say that Vietnamese people have a strong affection for Australian people. It is evident in the number of Vietnamese students in Australia. Of the 90,000 ASEAN students from Australia there are over 13,000 from Vietnam. [Inaudible] Australia is a multicultural country with a mutual respect for society.

PRIME MINISTER:

Thank you very much Prime Minister, it is wonderful to see you. We’ve spoken on the telephone but there is no substitute for meeting in person here today and having a very good discussion.

Thank you very much for your congratulations and for the way it was evident yesterday that we had a common viewpoint on important issues both economic development and of maritime security.

With so much to discuss and so much in common I look forward to having a very good detailed discussion now.
