Swan cuts spending on public order and safety

Senator the Hon George Brandis SC
Shadow Attorney-General

Federal Government spending on public order and safety has suffered a 2.7% reduction in funding in real terms in last night’s Budget [Budget Paper No. 1, p. 6-13], on the basis of the Budget’s assumption of 3.25% inflation over 2008-2009.

Public order and safety functions include the administration of the federal legal system, legal aid, law enforcement and intelligence activities.

These functions go to the most basic responsibilities of government – the protection of the community from internal and external threats, and the maintenance of the justice system’s framework.

It is disappointing, to say the least, that Mr Swan’s first budget would chip away at these basic obligations of government.
