Dr Marika was a calm, yet strong voice

Senator the Hon Nigel Scullion
Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry

The sudden death of Dr Marika is a sad day for her immediate family, her people in the Yirrkala Community and all Territorians, CLP Senator for the Northern Territory, Nigel Scullion said today.

“I was saddened to hear the news of Dr Marika’s passing. She was a tireless and passionate advocate for the education of all Indigenous people, children and adults alike,” Senator Scullion said.

“Her awards as Territorian of the Year and the Northern Territory’s Australian of the Year in recent years, were well deserved testaments to Dr Marika’s exceptional efforts as an educator and interpreter. She was a calm, yet strong voice for her Arnhem Land community.” added Senator Scullion.

“My thoughts go out to her three children, family and the entire Yirrkala Community,” he said.
