  • Impact of Carbon Tax on Tourism

    12/04/11

The Economic Importance of Tourism in Australia’s Regions report released today by the Gillard Government highlights the tourism regions that will be hit hardest by Labor’s carbon tax.

“Labor’s carbon tax will push up the cost of an Australian holiday and weaken our competitiveness in the domestic and international tourism markets,” Mr Baldwin said.

“Regions such as the Gold Coast, Tropical North Queensland, Sunshine Coast, NSW Mid North Coast and NSW Northern Rivers not only have a very high reliance on the tourism sector and they will suffer as a result of Labor’s carbon tax.

“The Gillard Government’s carbon tax will come on top of a cut in funding for Tourism Australia, a 24 per cent rise in the tourist departure tax, and whopping increases in visa fees.

“The combined effect of these poor policy decisions by the Gillard Government will dampen the growth of tourism in our regions.

“Labor shouldn’t be crowing about the success of tourism in the regions when their policy decisions are actively working against it.

“Labor is right to say that tourism is the lifeblood of many regional areas but they are wrong to attack this lifeblood with new taxes and cuts to tourism funding.

“The Coalition’s tourism policy proposed increasing tourism funding by $100 million, including a commitment to give domestic tourism development grants to Australia’s regional tourism organisations,” Mr Baldwin said.
