  • State rescue underlines Gillard cuts to childcare

    15/02/11

The Federal Coalition today welcomed moves by Western Australia’s Liberal Government to rescue over 20 of the state’s occasional childcare centres.

Shadow Minister for Childcare, Sussan Ley, says “these vital ‘neighbourhood model’ centres can now keep their doors open despite the Federal Government cutting their funding completely”.

Last year the Gillard Government mercilessly slashed over $12 million in funding from occasional childcare, a service which serves as a one-off or cost-effective short term care option for many parents.

Yesterday the State Government picked up the funding shortfall allowing 23 centres from throughout regional W.A. to remain open.

“Here we have a prime example of a State Government being forced to step in and pickup the Federal Government’s slack”, Ms Ley says.

“The Coalition shares Western Australia’s obligation to fund occasional care. We went to the last election committing to restore the $12.6 million in funding to ensure families are able to access these services when and if required.”

“Regrettably, unlike the West, other states are not so fortunate and I urge Federal Childcare Minister, Kate Ellis, to review these callous cuts to regions that can least afford it” Ms Ley said.
