  • As Parliament resumes, so do the boats

    07/02/11

As the Federal Parliament resumes after the summer recess, so too have the illegal boats, Shadow Minister for Productivity and Population & Shadow Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Scott Morrison and Shadow Minister for Justice, Customs and Border Protection, Michael Keenan said today.

“The start of the first Parliamentary sitting week of 2011 has been marked by another illegal boat arrival, reminding Australians of Julia Gillard’s border protection failure,” Mr Morrison said.

“So far this year the only deterrent to illegal boat arrivals has been the weather but the weather cannot be the only deterrent,” he said.

“When weather conditions improve so too will the people smuggling trade. Labor’s refusal to address its failed border protection policies will ensure that people smugglers continue to send boats on treacherous journeys to Australia.

“Under Labor 206 boats have illegally arrived with over 10,100 people on board and over 6,000 people are being detained by the Immigration Department.

“Every boat arrival is adding to the ever increasing $1.1 billion blow out taxpayers are being burden with because of Labor’s border protection mess and meanwhile Julia Gillard’s never never East Timor ‘solution’ is making her the laughing stock of our region.

“As long as the boats keep coming, the Coalition will continue to advocate for the full range of policies needed to stop the people smuggling boats,” he said.

Mr Keenan said: “After a brief absence because of prevailing weather conditions, people smugglers are again active in what highlights the continuing failure of Labor's border protection policies.

“As Parliament resumes this week, the Labor Government has the perfect opportunity to tackle people smugglers head on and resolve this issue once and for all.

“The Government can no longer run away from border protection, Christmas Island is overflowing and results are needed now,” he said.
