  • Confused or deliberately deceptive? Either way, it's not a good start for Swan

    29/09/10

In Question Time today, the Treasurer must have had a memory blank, forgetting comments that he made about the Gillard government’s intention to introduce a carbon tax.

He failed to answer the question, almost as if he couldn’t remember what he had said.  In fact, the words “carbon tax” were not even mentioned in his response.

Well, I’m more than happy to jolt your memory Treasurer.

On Meet the Press on August 15, less than a week out from the election, when asked with regard to the Labor Party putting a price on carbon in its next term of government, Treasurer Swan stated very clearly:

“Well, certainly what we rejected is this hysterical allegation somehow that we are moving towards a carbon tax from the Liberals and their advertising. We certainly reject that.”
Wayne Swan, Meet the Press, 15August 2010 [i]

Six weeks later, Parliament returns and the carbon tax is right back on the government’s agenda, and an entire Committee set up dedicated to the cause.

Either the pressure of Parliament returning has muddled the Treasurer’s mind, or he is trying to cover up yet another broken promise from the Gillard government.

Being so evasive on day one is not a good start for this weak and insipid Treasurer.
