  • Labor's cunning plan to have another cunning plan

    03/08/10

The Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food Security, John Cobb today said he wasn’t surprised the best policy the part-time Minister for Agriculture, could come up with was another cunning plan to have a cunning plan.

Mr Cobb said the Coalition had already announced that it would be having a Food Security Minister within Cabinet.

“Today’s announcement is nothing more than a catch-up policy.

“Having ignored food security in relation to his cunning plan to have a sustainable population plan, Minister Burke has now been stung into acting – however given his track record no one actually believes that Mr Burke will do anything with his cunning plan once it is finished.

“This part-time Agriculture Minister had form on cunning plans to have plans and despite spending $1.8 million on the Beale Review into Australia’s Bio-security which he has had sitting on his desk since September 2008 and almost two years later he still hasn’t formally responded to it recommendations.

“In fact the only his only action to date was to try and cut $35.8 million and 125 jobs out of the Bio-security budget. A move the Coalition had strongly opposed and eventually reversed.

“In every single budget since he has been Minister for Agriculture, Tony Burke has cut funding from the department, particularly from within research and development area. He has abolished Land and Water Australia and ripped $12 million out of the Rural Industries Research Development Council.

“Now the part-time Minister wants us to believe he will actually deliver something other than a plan to have a plan. You can’t eat a computer model,” Mr Cobb said.

“Amazingly the Minister Burke’s media release makes no mention of one of the most important ingredients needed for food security, namely water. Without water security there can be no food security.

Mr Cobb said the best thing any Government can do for farmers and small businesses is to keep interest rates low.

“Just imagine what we could have done for food security if the Gillard Government hadn’t wasted billions of dollars on school hall rip offs and dodgy insulation schemes,” Mr Cobb said.
