  • The Coalition will provide a ring road for Mackay

    27/07/10

The Coalition has today committed to provide a ring road for Mackay which will address a major infrastructure issue for the area.

The Mackay ring road will skirt western Mackay and will link the Bruce and Peak Downs Highways with the town’s port.

The Coalition will provide an initial investment of $30 million over the next three years, with $6 million 2011-12, $12 million in 2012-13 and $12 million in 2013-14. Our $30 million commitment will go towards the design, engineering and preparatory work for the ring road’s construction. In total, the ring road will cost approximately $240 million to complete.

Mackay is a major regional centre and more than 1,500 trucks travel through the town each day. Truck movements are expected to increase as the town’s port is a growing centre for exporting resources from the Bowen Basin.

The Coalition’s commitment to fund the ring road will deliver real benefits for Mackay and North-East Queensland. The ring road will allow for faster and more efficient movement of freight and coal traffic and will encourage the development of industries and businesses in the nearby Ooralea area. It will promote regional economic growth and productivity as the ring road will be the key link between the industrial park at Paget and the Bowen Basin.

The ring road will also make traffic conditions safer by taking heavy trucks out of central Mackay and will provide a much safer way for passenger and freight vehicles to travel around the town and the surrounding region.

The Coalition is taking real action to address the infrastructure needs of Mackay and North East Queensland.

Unlike the federal and state Labor governments, we are not engaging in endless talk, consultation and studies. We are providing funding for necessary design, engineering and preparatory work to be completed so that construction can commence as soon as possible.

The Mackay ring road is yet another vital infrastructure project that Labor has fobbed off to a study and failed to deliver despite the clear economic and social benefits the ring road will provide. Only a Coalition government will deliver on the infrastructure that provides concrete social and economic benefits for communities and users.

This investment will be funded from nearly $24 billion of recurrent savings already identified by the Coalition across the forward estimates.
